Breaking News :: Coronavirus and Information Advocacy

22-28 minutes

The Russian vaccine is being produced in Kharkiv, the Portuguese court did not recognize the quarantine as illegal, in the test for the coronavirus on the chip forum, and Bill Gates will not give compulsory vaccinations to anyone.

Media Detector and its subsidiary website MediaSapiens launched the Truth and Fiction About Coronavirus project, in which we track and refute fakes about the coronavirus epidemic, back in January 2020. And since March, we have examined and analyzed news and discussions on political talk shows regarding the coronavirus and the fight against it in Ukraine and the world. In December, a series of materials starts - an overview of false information (fakes) about the coronavirus (of course, with a refutation) that were spreading in the Ukrainian media space.

Vaccination fakes

Bizarre accusations against coronavirus vaccines that appeared in the Ukrainian segment of social networks during this period - that they contain nanobots, reasonable technological work. Why this is not true, explained VoxCheck in a partnership with Facebook . Scientists are really thinking about the possibility of using nanoparticles in vaccines to enhance their effectiveness, but so far they have not been able to do this in practice.

Another manipulation concerns not COVID-19, but influenza and seasonal coronavirus infections, which we usually call "colds". Social media spread the claim that flu shots increase the risk of contracting one of these diseases, and fear of the word "coronavirus", which is perceived as synonymous with COVID-19, completed the manipulative effect. VoxCheck explains that the study that identified this dependence was conducted two to three years ago (that is, before the advent of SARS-CoV-2), and moreover, it was criticized more than once by experts.

One of the most common fakes from late November to early December comes from Italy. This is a video of a man who is called a doctor speaking in the Italian parliament (some reports claim to be the medical examiner Pasquale Mario Bacca). He says doctors around the world have deliberately killed people on orders from the World Health Organization. Bakki argues that it is impossible to make a vaccine against coronavirus, because the virus mutates, and SARS-Cov-2 cannot kill people and there will be no second wave of a pandemic, because humanity, they say, is approaching the development of "herd immunity." In doing so, he referred to his nowhere published study, which showed that Italians were infected with this virus as early as October 2019. VoxCheck points out blatant liesBakka: Yes, he says that COVID-19 "has not killed a single person", except for those who had problems with the immune system or related diseases. However, among the 1.3 million people who died from coronavirus disease at the end of November, there were many people. who did not have such problems. As for October 2019, the information about the appearance of the coronavirus in Italy at the "official" start of the epidemic in China was indeed made public in the local media. But we are talking about November, not October 2019.

Russian media - News-front , imag.one , oko-planet.su and others - with reference to the Facebook post of pro-Russian Ukrainian politics on Elena Markosyan, reported that Ukraine intends to purchase the Sputnik V vaccine in Germany at an inflated price. Markosyan suggests: if Germany produces a Russian vaccine, then it will do it for Ukraine, but " to sell it to us not at two dollars per dose, but at best ten dollars ." StopFake clarified"That information about the possible production of a Russian vaccine in Germany has not been confirmed by anyone except the Russians themselves," Kirill Dmitriev, director of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, said in an interview with the Russia 24 channel. The Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly repeated that they will not buy a vaccine that has not passed clinical trials.

Monitoring of pro-Russian disinformation narratives showed that Viktor Medvedchuk's media are making a lot of efforts to describe the chairman of the political council of the "opposition platform - For Life" as the savior of Ukraine, and has agreed to supply "the world 's most popular " Sputnik V vaccines in Ukraine. And although the elections were held, fakes on this topic were not exhausted. One of them parses in detail MediaSapiens, Russian and Medvedchuk media reported that the Kharkiv enterprise Biolek is ready to start production of Sputnik V. During a meeting with Russian officials, which ZIK, 112 and NewsOne channels broadcast live, Medvedchuk showed a video that allegedly recorded the production of a Russian vaccine in Kharkov. This achievement, of course, was attributed to Medvedchuk, who once again " agreed on a vaccine for Ukraine ." "Biolek" denied this information, assuring that it does not violate the laws and if a vaccine against coronavirus is produced, then only certified in Ukraine. However, Medvedchuk's media are manipulative here as well, submitting this statement as evidence of the readiness of the Biolek company to produce the Russian vaccine (which is only hindered by the unwillingness of the Ukrainian authorities to certify the drug).

The news of the deaths of six people who took part in Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine trials was published with manipulative headlines or without sufficient clarification to make it clear that the deaths were not related to the harmfulness or ineffectiveness of the vaccine. The publications that disseminated such news are criticized by the "Damned Rationalist" YouTube channel . Although the publications themselves have information that two of the deceased received the vaccine, and four received a placebo, and these six (from 43400) died not from coronavirus, but from other diseases. A detailed refutation of the stuffing about one of the most promising vaccines was described by the project “ Beyond the News". This fake came to Ukraine from Russian media, which suggests that they are trying to discredit the Pfizer vaccine in the interests of the manufacturers of the Russian Sputnik V.

Another fake that compromises the Pfizer vaccine claims it makes women infertile. Like, the vaccine will teach the immune system to attack the protein syncytin, which is involved in the formation of the placenta. Allegedly, the source of this information is a person who worked in the American corporation Pfizer until 2011. MediaSapiens reports that scientists have denied this claim, saying they did not see a connection between the vaccine and infertility.

The Russian edition vesti.ru reported that the British company AstraZeneca falsified the data on its coronavirus vaccine. According to a Russian source, the 90% effectiveness of the vaccine, which the company announced, concerned only people under the age of 55, and for older people, its effectiveness is about 60%. And now in America they are hesitating to buy a vaccine from AstraZeneca. StopFake found out that, in fact, we are talking about an ordinary technical error in the packaging of an experimental drug, which the company made, and the next day it found out and honestly reported everything. Therefore, accusations of rigging are fake.

While some fakes are convincing that the vaccine is ineffective, others are intimidated by forced vaccination. StopFake debunks the lie widespread on social networks that bill No. 4142 "On the public health system" provides for " compulsory vaccination of children without parental consent ", and "the property of unvaccinated people will be recognized as infected and seized ." In fact, the project does not provide for any reprisals against those who do not want to vaccinate themselves or vaccinate their children.

False information about the compulsory vaccination of Poles was also spread. The lawyer, quoted by the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, says that in order to make vaccination compulsory, a special law must be passed, but until it is proven that the vaccine is absolutely safe, vaccinations must remain voluntary. VoxCheck points out the distortion in the translation: "The akhivtsi argue that the available medicines are not well studied, they say, there is no time to research them deeper ." In fact, in the material of the Polish edition there are different opinions about whether vaccination can be compulsory in a state that is a member of the European Union.

Fakes about statistics and tests

The incidence statistics for coronavirus disease are fake, they say, coronavirus tests are fake. This fake was massively distributed in December on social networks. They say that the creators of the PCR test did not see a live virus in the eyes; these tests detect coronavirus even in apple juice; 50% of the tests are false. And all this in order to urge people to refuse vaccination with the "deadly vaccine". StopFake refutes all the claims that make up this fake construction - like another fake about the chip allegedly found in a coronavirus test. A photo of the Matsupusinki chip, which illustrates this message, taken long before the appearance of the coronavirus, and it has nothing to do with testing.

The creators of the fakes accused the Ukrainian authorities of selling tests for 1,700 hryvnia, which cost no more than two and a half dollars. VoxCheck denies that the state does not charge money for tests at all - people pay only when they do tests in private laboratories. The state does not regulate prices on the commercial market, but many clinics have tests for coronavirus, much cheaper than 1,700 hryvnia. By the way, "Beyond the News" calls on all those who are not indifferent (and, obviously, law enforcement agencies) to rebuff scammers who trade in positive results of fake PCR tests.

Fakes about treatment and the course of the disease

A young Russian doctor who works in China " - perhaps for someone such a source sounds convincing. It was this "doctor" that the authors of the fake statement referred to: if you have a wet cough, it is definitely not a coronavirus. Also, the "young doctor" claims that the coronavirus instantly dies at temperatures exceeding 56 degrees Celsius, and within fifteen minutes at temperatures exceeding 37 degrees. That the virus lives on metal for at least 12:00, and on human hands - 5-10 minutes, and the most common way of infection is to touch people. StopFake analyzed in detailthese are false statements. By the way, the “young Russian doctor” recommended gargling with alcohol-containing preparations to fight against coronavirus, suggesting that the authors of the fake just wanted to revive the most famous stereotype about Russians.

If distributors of fakes are inclined to believe the legends of the words of an anonymous "Russian doctor", then the man in the white coat in the video should sound completely convincing to them. Even when he calls the masks "idiotic", as the hero of this video . He claims that masks protect healthy people from infection with coronavirus, so only sick people need them. Although the results of the study show that wearing a mask can prevent 40% of infections.

It is clear what such fakes are for: to give people a reason to refuse to wear masks, which is mandatory during an epidemic. Another similar fake, spread by the Medalternative community , claims that asymptomatic patients do not spread the coronavirus. This seems to follow from studies conducted in the same city of Wuhan in China. So, the conclusion of the fake creation is that restrictive measures do not make sense, because if you are not sneezing and not at temperatures, then no one is now. According to VoxCheck , this interpretation is rejected by the study authors themselves. In addition, there are a number of other studies that show that asymptomatic carriers can be contagious.

Another common theme in false news about the coronavirus is that the disease is "not what you think." In particular, a video of an American nurse was distributed on social networks, who claimed that coronavirus disease is a blood disease, because hemoglobin attacks. VoxCheck denies that there is no scientific basis for this assumption, and in the study cited by the nurse there were a number of violations. In the end, there is a fake that generally denies the existence of the virus - they say, people are massively sick from nitrogen dioxide. But even the most adherents of conspiracy theories should doubt the seriousness of its author , a certain Yuri Litvinenko.

Quarantine fakes

The whole world is rebelling against quarantine - the creators of fakes have been trying to portray such a picture for several months. For example, one of them claims that in Argentina, protesters against quarantine threw stones at police. In fact, they were reproached, but the conflict was not related to the coronavirus or quarantine, explains StopFake.

Social media users and marginal online publications reported that the Lisbon Court of Appeal found the PCR tests for coronavirus to be fake, and the quarantine was illegal. In fact, as reported by StopFake, this is the story of four tourists in the Azores who were isolated at a hotel because one of them tested positive for a PCR test. The tourists went to court, which found their isolation illegal, and the health department appealed. So the decision in question does not concern quarantine in general, but a specific case of four people who could not be isolated on the basis of only one positive test.

Massively disseminated in social networks a message interpreting the word "lockdown" as "a term from prison vocabulary when prisoners are not released from their cells for violation ." StopFake has looked into the dictionary and corrects : " the imposition of arrested persons in cells for the whole or most of the day as a temporary security measure " is just one of the many meanings of the English lockdown. And obviously not the main thing.

Such a Vlad Freedom, referring to "the chief doctor for COVID in Estonia ", claims that 98% of patients with coronavirus disease are cured without medication. In fact, explains VoxCheck, no one really knows what percentage of coronavirus patients are taking medication. The health care system neither in Estonia nor in any other country records all the drugs that patients with coronavirus disease take (not to mention the fact that some patients will never know about their status, since they carry the disease asymptomatically). However, a false statement helps the author of the fake to move on to the next false theses, including masks do not protect against infection (this was mentioned above).

In general, fakes always look more convincing if they refer to foreign publications. For example, on this material from Natural News . Although it consists of lies and distortions about the course of the epidemic and quarantine in the United States. In particular, it talks about the creation of something like concentration camps, where representatives of risk groups will be taken and forcibly vaccinated. They say that the governor of Ohio ordered to organize isolation wards for everyone who came into contact with patients with coronavirus disease or became infected himself (in fact, not). VoxCheck analyzed and refuted this collection of false facts.

And to the quotes of prominent people. The first of them is Bill Gates, who is allegedly trying to "improve" the gene pool of mankind with the help of a pandemic and compulsory vaccination. VoxCheck once again reminds that Gates did not say anything like that.

The second is Charles Darwin, who formulated the concept of natural selection. Now the authors of motivational pictures on social networks consider the coronavirus epidemic a tool of this very natural selection, like plague and cholera in the past. Why this is incorrect, explains Beyond the News.

If you last saw Jim Carrey in The Mask, you noticed from looking at this photo how old he is. But this is not the main thing in this picture. The main thing is that the words that are written on it, Kerry did not say or write. VoxCheck reports that this quote began to be dispersed on social networks back in March, but then it did not have an author yet. Why the creators of the fakes chose Jim Carrey is a rhetorical question.

In Moscow and the Moscow region, they began to vaccinate against coronavirus. To do this, use the Sputnik V vaccine of the National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after Honorary Academician NF Gamaleya. Recently, there was news in the media that the use of the vaccine (two injections needed) is incompatible with the use of alcohol. Meduza is investigating whether this is so.

All of Meduza's materials on coronavirus are open for distribution under the Creative Commons CC BY license . You can reprint them! The license does not apply to photography.

Chain of quotes

Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Tatyana Golikova

A full-fledged immune response to the vaccine will be formed during all 42 days, so it is important not to get infected with coronavirus during these days.

"She noted that everyone who will be vaccinated will have to observe the regime for 42 days, limit the use of alcohol and drugs that suppress the immune system, observe a mask regime and distance in public places."

Interfax

Head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova

You must stop drinking alcohol at least two weeks before immunization. 42 days from the first injection is the formation of immunity, and you need to be careful.

Komsomolskaya Pravda

Director of the National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after Honorary Academician N.F. Gamaleya Alexander Gintsburg

We strongly recommend that you refrain from alcohol for three days after each injection. <…> Of course, there is no question of any complete ban on alcohol during vaccination.

Interfax

Who to trust?

This is a difficult question. The instructions for the vaccine do not contain a clause about alcohol (as in the instructions for the EpiVacCorona vaccine , as well as in the information on the use of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine). In addition, Meduza was unable to find foreign or Russian recommendations to abstain from alcohol before or after vaccination of any kind. And the drug / food compatibility service on the popular Drugs.com site couldn't find any known interactions between the main vaccines and alcohol (yes, even the rabies vaccine is alcohol compatible ).

What science knows at least a little about is how effective vaccination is for alcohol abuse, and not for normal use (which Russian officials urge to abandon).

Constant exposure to high doses of alcohol impairs the immune system. Consequently, vaccinations may not work as well for people who abuse alcohol And there are several small studies that show that in certain cases (for example, when vaccinated against hepatitis B), antibodies do appear less . Although this cannot be called an established fact: there are studies that show different results . Moreover, the level of antibodies may not indicate the degree of protection - we wrote about this, for example, here .

In other words, it is best not to abuse alcohol either before or after vaccination. Moreover, compliance with the norm is, in principle, good for health.

And if, just in case, do not drink at all - then how much?

Decide for yourself. 42 days is how long after the start of vaccination, according to the instructions, all the volunteers developed antibodies. Where did all the other numbers, named by the officials, come from, we do not know.

Caption to the photo, Mass vaccination will force the coronavirus to mutate many more times in search of an option to infect even people who have received the vaccine

When I hear about the emergence of a new genetic variant of the coronavirus (its new strain), every time I ask the main question first. And this question sounds like this: "Has the behavior of the virus changed as a result?"

We are instinctively afraid of any reports of a mutant virus, although mutations (that is, genetic changes) of any virus are natural and inevitable.

In most cases, some deviations occur in the genome of the virus that do not particularly affect its properties, or the virus becomes less infectious - and then relatively soon the new genetic variation fades away.

Only in rare cases does a new combination of genes obtained as a result of mutation endow the virus with new characteristics that make it more dangerous.

There is no conclusive evidence that the new genetic version of the coronavirus found recently in the southeast of England is more infectious. There is also no evidence that the new strain causes more severe disease or that already developed vaccines do not protect against it. However, scientists are still closely monitoring his behavior, and there are two reasons for this.

The first is that the new strain is more common in regions where more infections are reported. This is not a good sign, although there can be two possible explanations.

First: the virus mutated in such a way that it began to spread faster, Second: he accidentally "was lucky" to infect people whose behavior contributed to a wider spread of the infection. This is how, apparently, the so-called "Spanish strain" spread widely in the summer: people who became infected on vacation returned home and brought the virus along with them.

To establish whether a new strain really spreads faster than others, it is necessary to conduct appropriate laboratory experiments.

Dozens of mutations

"It has a huge number of varieties - much more than you might expect - and some mutations are quite curious," says Professor Nick Lohman of a group of British experts studying the genome of the coronavirus that causes Covid-19.

Two groups of mutations should be specially noted, since they are directly related to the spike protein - these spines form the "crown" of the virus and allow it to enter our cells, playing the role of a kind of master key.

The first type of mutation (N501) changes the main constituent of the spike protein - the so-called receptor-binding domain. This is the part that first comes into contact with the cell, and any changes that make it easier for the virus to get inside will give it an edge. So, according to Professor Loman, this mutation could play an important role in the further spread of the infection.

Caption to the photo, Mass vaccination will force the coronavirus to mutate many more times in search of an option to infect even people who have received the vaccine

The second type of mutation (H69 / V70) has already appeared several times, independently of each other - in particular, it was she who led to a massive infection of minks on farms in Denmark.

This mutation also raises concerns, since blood transfusions from recovered patients are less helpful for patients infected with this form of the virus - it seems that donor antibodies do not cope with the mutated virus as effectively.

However, it will also be possible to understand what is happening not earlier than the corresponding analyzes are carried out in the laboratories.

"We know that a new strain has emerged, but we still cannot say anything about what consequences it can lead from the point of view of biology. So it is too early to draw any far-reaching conclusions," warns University of Birmingham professor Alan McNally ...

Any mutations in the spike protein jeopardize the effectiveness of vaccines, because it is not he who is taught to respond to our immune system in all the already developed drugs - produced by Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca.

However, the body can block the spikes of the virus from different directions, so health officials are convinced that the vaccine will cope with the new strain.

Transmitted to humans from animals just about a year ago, since then the virus has changed on average twice a month. If we compare the virus that infects patients today with the first version of the Sars-Cov-2 genome, decoded in January in Wuhan, China, they will differ by about 25 mutations.

At the same time, the coronavirus continues to change, looking for a set of mutations that will make it possible to infect people most effectively.

We have seen this before: the emergence and widespread distribution of the G614 strain is considered by many scientists to be an indicator that this mutation allowed the virus to spread more rapidly.

After the mass vaccination begins, the virus will have to change again - and, perhaps, it will find a way to infect already vaccinated people.

If it manages to evolve in this way, most likely we will have to regularly make changes to the vaccine, as the flu vaccine is now updated.

Have you seen a fake about the coronavirus, which was not included in this collection, but is worth a refutation? MediaSapiens would be grateful for your information. Email us at mediasapiens.dm@gmail.com.
