35 million dollars stolen by fraudsters in the UAE using a deepfake voice
Criminals robbed a bank in the UAE. They identified themselves as the director of a large company: they faked his voice using artificial intelligence technologies and convinced a bank employee to transfer money to fraudulent accounts.
Forbes reports that the incident took place in January 2020, but the details were only released now.
The head of one of the branches of the bank (the name was not disclosed) answered the call, and the person who called introduced himself as the director of a large company, with whom the head of the branch recently spoke.
The fraudster told the employee that the company was closing a major deal worth $ 35 million, and convinced him to transfer this amount to the allegedly new accounts of the firm. The employee did not suspect anything, since the director's voice was no different from the real one.
Also for credibility, the fraudster sent fake company emails to the employee and brought in a lawyer to the case.
The investigation found out that the culprit used deepfake technology to clone the speech and voice of the director. In total, 17 people became accomplices in the fraudulent scheme.
The stolen money was transferred to many bank accounts scattered around the world. Two of them are open in the American Centennial Bank, so the UAE law enforcement agencies asked the United States for help.
