VMware is software that simulates the operation of other operating systems in an already installed OS without the need to reinstall it. To transfer, you need to convert the virtual server format to ovf or ova.

The Open Virtualization Format is a packaging standard for storing and distributing software systems.

Open Virtual Appliance - OVF catalog distribution package.

Formats must meet the following requirements:

  • Hardware no higher than 11;
  • SCSI hard drive.

All VMware products are characterized by an easy conversion process to the required format. Let's take a closer look at server and device virtualization for some software products.

VMware Workstation

Requirements:

  • Make sure that there is no encryption of the software system, otherwise the export in the required format will not be available;
  • Turn it off if necessary.

Installation steps:

  • Select the software system, then click File> Export to OVF;
  • Create a unique name for the file, choose the location where it will be saved;
  • Use the "Save" command to start the transfer process. The action takes several minutes, the progress of the export is reflected in the status bar.

VMware Fusion

The requirements are similar to those for working with VMware Workstation, that is, you must turn off the software system and make sure that it is not encrypted.

Installation steps:

  • Select the required software system, then follow the path similar to VMware Workstation;
  • Enter a unique filename and specify the save directory;
  • Start the export process by clicking the "Save" command. The wait process is similar to VMware Workstation.

vSphere Client

Installation steps:

  • Select the software system, enter the File menu item, then select Export> Export OVF Template;
  • In the export settings window, you must enter the name of the template;

    Important! When transferring a template with a name that contains characters (*), they will be replaced with such characters - (_).

  • Select the path to save the file;
  • In the "Format" line, select the desired file type.
    If OVF is selected, the template will be saved as a set of files. This option is used when migration to disk storage or server is required.
    OVA is an OVF archive. It is used for rational movement in such cases when a document is downloaded from an Internet resource or transferred from a medium.
  • In the "Description" line, you must enter a description of the software system, deleting the default text;
  • To enable the display of graphic files, you must select the checkbox. It will be visible only when connecting ISO files or image to the drive;
  • The last step is to click the OK button. The data transfer progress is displayed in the status bar.

VMware OVF Tool

VMware OVF Tool is a product for importing and exporting .ovf files from VMware developer programs. The program is used to convert files of the .vmx format to .ovf in order to create virtual modules from virtual machines.

The first step is to download the product from an official source. Select the required version in the program installer.

Next step: go to your Downloads folder and start the installation process.

After that, sign in to the Windows PowerShell app. To convert the format, in the directory selected during installation, find a file named ovftool.exe. Below is an example:

C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware OVF Tool\ovftool.exe

Enter the VMware OVF Tool with the cd command:

cd 'C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware OVF Tool\'

Enter the command below:

.\ovftool.exe <путь до файла vmx> <путь до файла ovf>

One more example:

.\ovftool.exe "C:\VM\VM-example\VM-example.vmx" "C:\VM\VM-example\VM-example.ovf"

If you follow the installation instructions carefully, the VMware virtual machine migration process will be successful.
