The Estonian-owned cargo ship Helt sank off the Ukrainian port of Odessa on Thursday after an explosion, the ship's manager said. It is reported by Reuters.

The ship, which sailed under the flag of Panama, received a hole below the waterline and sank in the Black Sea (disappeared from radar) at about noon.

“ Vessel signaled Mayday on channel 16, was in communication with SKC/MPRS. Position 46'22 n 31'04 e, 20 miles from Odessa, VHF cannot be heard. The last report from the vessel is a 70-degree list, we are boarding rafts ,” the Ukrainian Sea Ports Administration said in a statement.

Ukrainian rescuers were unable to swim to the rescue of the crew due to a ban from Russian ships. At the moment, two sailors are known to have survived.

Recall that on March 2, the ships of the Russian Federation demanded that the civilian ship Helt enter the Black Sea danger zone so that the invaders could hide behind it as a human shield, otherwise the ships of the Russian Federation threatened to open fire on the ship.

The USPA recalled that the entrances to Ukrainian seaports are closed due to the mine hazard, as well as the threat of piracy from the ships of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation in the Black and Azov Seas.
