Counterfeit SSDs are being sold around the world
Counterfeit solid state drives began to spread in different countries . They are sold on major sites, including AliExpress and Amazon.
A fake, for example, was reported by a Chinese user from the Baidu forums. He bought an imitation Samsung 980 Pro with a sticker from the manufacturer. The user claims that the fake was of high quality and even "managed to fool" the Samsung Magician software. However, after removing the sticker, it became clear that it was a counterfeit SSD.
The drive uses a Maxio MAP1602A PCIe 4.0 SSD controller, the same one used in the Acer Predator GM7. The controller is based on TSMC's 12nm process and features a DRAM-free design. More savvy consumers know that Samsung manufactures and uses its own SSD controllers and NAND chips in the brand's SSDs. In the case of the Samsung 980 Pro, the SSD uses an 8nm Elpis controller with a DRAM design. In addition, Samsung controllers are usually larger than those of the competition. In terms of NAND selection, the Samsung 980 Pro uses 128-layer TLC 3D V-NAND. The fake drive uses 128-layer TLC 3D NAND (X2-9060) YMTC, built using Chinese chipmaker Xtacking 2.0 technology.
Obviously, with a different SSD and NAND controller, the fake drive won't work the same as the real Samsung 980 Pro. Based on user-provided benchmarks, SSD sequential read and write speeds are around 4.8Gb/s and 4.5Gb/s respectively in CrystalDiskMark and up to 4.2Gb/s and 3.9Gb/s in AS SSD. At the same time, the real Samsung 980 Pro offers sequential read and write speeds up to 7 Gb / s and 5 Gb / s, respectively, depending on the capacity. Thus, performance figures on a fake drive are much lower.
A Chinese user bought a fake from Xianyu, a Taobao second-hand market. The SSD cost him $128 (the real drive costs $170). However, it came in the official Samsung packaging.
Similar cases are recorded on AliExpress, as well as on American sites. For example, at Walmart you can buy a portable SSD with a capacity of 30 TB for only $39, and at Amazon a 16 TB SSD can cost $100.
