Resume: The Pentagon has awarded SpaceX, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, a contract to provide Starlink terminals and satellite communications services to Ukraine. The exact terms of the contract were not disclosed due to operational security concerns. The Starlink satellite communications system has been instrumental for the Ukrainian military, supporting battlefield communications since the start of the Russian invasion. With over 4,000 satellites in low Earth orbit, SpaceX's network has been crucial in providing Ukraine with communications, supported by private donations. The new Starlink terminals will likely be acquired through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. Despite attempts by Russia to disrupt internet services, including targeting Starlink communications, SpaceX has successfully defended its services through software hardening. This contract ensures enhanced communication capabilities and resilience for Ukraine.

The Starlink satellite communications system has been used by the Ukrainian military for a variety of purposes, including battlefield communications, since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022.

Elon Musk's company has a network of over 4,000 satellites in low Earth orbit. The network provided Ukraine with communications in accordance with a special contract and at the expense of private donations, Voice of America reports .

In October 2022, Musk stated that he could not afford the perpetual financing of Starlink in Ukraine, as his monthly spending on this system was $20 million.

The new Starlink terminals are likely to be purchased under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. In December, the Pentagon announced a new funding package under this initiative.

Russia tried to shut down and block Internet services in Ukraine, including attempts to block Starlink communications in the region, but SpaceX repelled the attacks on its services by hardening their software.
