OBEY (Russian: OBEY) is a rather rare meme that came to us from abroad. It is usually used when forcing something, as well as in threads about totalitarianism, oppression and revolutionary sentiments.

It all started when four students led by Ryan Lesser from Rhode Island came up with a vinyl sticker with the image of wrestler André the Giant and the caption "ANDRE THE GIANT HAS A POSSE, 520lb". At the time, the authors thought it was a joke - experimental street graffiti.

And then classmate Shepard Fairey joined them, presenting the laconic slogan as a parody of propaganda. Thus began an active campaign of promotion. Later on, there were posters: Obama "HOPE", Pepsi and whatever else came to mind. Since Titan Sports Inc. owned the rights to the André the Giant trademark at the time, Shepard stopped using the slogan with the wrestler and created an image of Andre's face with the words OBEY. The "OBEY" slogan was not only a parody of propaganda - Shepard was inspired by John Carpenter's 1988 film They Live, where the film's hero, taqui wrestler Roddy Piper, finds a pair of sunglasses in which he begins to see the world as it really is: people are pressed with subliminal messages like "Obey," "Adapt," "Consume," etc.; many of the city's residents are aliens; and many of the city's residents are aliens. etc.; many of the city's inhabitants are aliens who are slowly but surely taking over and controlling humanity with these slogans.

Shepard Fairey's later propaganda works are clever and subtle parodies of a range of ideas, images and personalities that are canonical in contemporary culture and human life. In addition to stickers (stickers), the Obey Giant-movement spread around the world in the form of stencils, graffiti, and huge posters. The second most famous was the "HOPE" poster with Barack Obama.

Actually, this PR campaign (or rather, street movement) still exists today, and Fairey even starred in the street art movie "Exit Through the Gift Shop."

Obey, founded by famed rayther, artist and graphic designer Shepard Fairey, has incredibly quickly gained worldwide notoriety for its bold counter-cultural direction. Shepard himself is known for his works stylized as propaganda posters, designed to awaken public consciousness. These are, first of all, the famous images of wrestler Andre the Giant with the signature Obey, which later became the main logo of the brand, and Barack Obama's election poster called Hope, which caused many scandals and lawsuits, but at the same time became a real symbol of American Democrats.

From graffiti works on topical socio-political themes and the creation of pop-art images criticizing modern consumer culture, Fairey in 2001 moved to the production of clothing for today's active youth. In this way the young designer decided to spread his idea all over the world, putting his philosophy, outlook and life position into his work. Every season the brand releases new collections of clothes for guys and girls, surprising us with new themes and various design directions, so it is safe to say that Shepard and his team still have everything ahead of them and they will not soon leave the pedestal of the most popular brands of our time.

Obey clothes came to our country quite recently, but have already become a favorite of many fans of street style. In addition to fashionable sweatshirts, shirts, T-shirts and T-shirts, the company today also produces pants, shorts, skirts, dresses, raglans, pullovers, as well as a line of various accessories and jewelry for guys and girls. Shepherd collaborates with many contemporary brands and designers to always surprise its fans with exciting new additions.
