In Russia, the FSB has obtained technologies that allow it to monitor correspondence in encrypted messengers such as Telegram, WhatsApp and Signal, as well as identify anonymous users, hack accounts and track the geolocation of mobile devices

This is reported by The New Tork Times with reference to documents from suppliers of tracking technologies and a person associated with digital tracking operations in the Russian Federation.

The newspaper writes that a number of Russian technology firms belonging to the Citadel Group are involved in tracking people through messengers. Previously, it partially belonged to Alisher Usmanov, one of the "favorite oligarchs" of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Among these companies are "MFI-Soft", "Vas-Experts" and "Protey".

Thus, MFI-Sphot offers a tracking system that provides display of information about subscribers and their Internet traffic. Proteus, on the other hand, provides products that help convert voice from intercepted phone calls into text. the company also offers tools to detect "suspicious behavior".

The NetBeholder tool also helps track users. It shows the geolocation of two phones throughout the day to determine if they have crossed paths with each other. This helps to understand whether the owners of the phones have met each other. Also, the program can check how often several phones are in the same area. Based on this, it can be concluded that someone can use two or more phones.

In addition, NetBeholder has full access to information about subscribers of communications from telecommunication networks. In this way, the tool can accurately determine the region of the Russian Federation in order to understand which region each user is from, or where a citizen of another country came from.

And while NetBeholder cannot intercept the content of messages, it can determine exactly where the data sent is going. Thus, the tool accurately determines when someone sends a certain file or connects to a voice call in Telegram, WhatsApp and Signal. In this way, the FSB gets access to important metadata. We are talking about information about who, when, where and with whom they are talking and about the files attached to the message.

Other software may collect passwords entered on unencrypted sites.

The newspaper writes that some tracking programs and other surveillance technologies have already begun to spread beyond the borders of the Russian Federation. Thus, marketing documents indicate that the companies plan to sell their products in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. They also intend to spread them in Africa, the Middle East and South America. In particular, according to Citizen Lab, Protey's equipment was used by a telecommunications company from Iran to record Internet traffic and block websites.

Messenger developers Telegram, WhatsApp and Signal note that they have few data protection measures against this type of tracking. According to them, encryption can hide certain messages exchanged by users, but cannot block the data exchanged. In particular, Signal developers recommend using a function that sends traffic through another server. In this way, you can hide its source and destination.
