After Twitter implemented temporary restrictions on the number of views of posts, users of the social network began to actively talk about the transition to Bluesky.

We have collected short answers to all relevant questions about the new social network - who created it, how to get there and what is the fundamental difference between Bluesky and Twitter.

What is Bluesky?

Bluesky is a decentralized social app with a Twitter-like interface and concept. This is not surprising, because Bluesky was developed by the former CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey.

How does Bluesky work?

Bluesky is actually a decentralized protocol for the interaction of different social networks, each of which may have its own rules, restrictions and capabilities, but at the same time they are compatible and united in one big network. The protocol itself is called Authenticated Transfer (AT) Protocol.

In parallel with the development of the protocol, the company launched its own social network Bluesky Social, in which everyone is now registered. However, other social networks based on the AT protocol developed by Bluesky may appear in the future. It is important to mention that blockchain is not used.

Besides Dorsey, who is working on Bluesky?

Jack Dorsey, who invested $13 million in the project, is not the only one working on the social network. For example, Jay Graber and Golda Velez inspired Dorsey to create Bluesky. The first to the position of CEO at Bluesky was a software engineer at the crypto company Zcash, the second worked at Postmates by Uber.

What are the differences between Bluesky Social and Twitter?

Instead of nicknames, Bluesky Social issues domains like nachasi.bsky.social to users . If you have your own site, you can link its domain to the system, thereby confirming that the account belongs to the organization.

The default feed is the profiles you're subscribed to, with no algorithms. There are also recommendations, but unlike Twitter, they are less intrusive and coercive. At least for now.

Moderation takes place according to the principles of "labeling", that is, most of the content will have a certain mark, and you choose whether you want to see it in your feed.

Another interesting possibility is lists or Feeds. Users can create sets of profiles (for example, grouped by topic) and then share these sets with others. Each list can be read separately from the main feed. Twitter also has this option, but Bluesky Social makes it much more accessible.

How to get to Bluesky?

Currently, the social network is still in beta testing, so it is not so easy to get into it. Currently, there are several possibilities, the first of which is an invite code that can be received from another user of the social network. Each user receives a code once every two weeks (as of this post) to share with others.

The Ukrainian community has already united in finding and distributing invitations — for example, to donate to the needs of our defenders. The Ukrtvizaliznytsia account is also a vivid example .

Another way is to sign up for the waiting list on the website . After receiving the code, you will need to install the Bluesky application, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play . A web version is also available.

It is worth noting that currently Bluesky is already actively used by more than 200,000 users. In addition, more than 1.9 million people joined the waiting list. The developers promise to finalize the new platform and later open access to it for everyone. You can also find our editorial office in Bluesky — under the domain nachasi.bsky.social .
