Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi wrote a letter to his family before being hospitalized in Milan's San Rafaele hospital, which contains a will.

It is reported by "European Truth" with reference to the publication Corriere della Sera.

The letter is dated January 19, 2022. Berlusconi filled out the blank letter by hand in black ink. In total, he wrote about fifteen lines.

The publication cites the text of a letter written by Berlusconi, in which he addresses his family.

"The testament of Silvio Berlusconi. Dear Marino, Pier Silvio, Barbaro and Eleonoro, I am leaving for San Rafael. If I do not return, please consider the following," the letter says.

Berlusconi notes that from his inheritance, members of his family should reserve 100 million euros for the brother of former Italian Prime Minister Paolo.

Another 100 million euros, according to the above letter, should receive the last wife of Berlusconi, Marta Fashina.

Former senator and close friend of Berlusconi Marcello del'Utri should receive 30 million euros.

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi died in Milan's San Rafael hospital at the age of 86 on Monday, June 12.

Berlusconi, who led three Italian governments from 1994 to 2011, is considered by most Italians to be the most powerful figure in the country in recent decades, but there is still no consensus as to whether this influence was positive or negative for the country.

The politician is known for his friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and distinguished himself by controversial statements about Ukraine. In particular, in October 2022, he stated that Ukraine could negotiate with Russia if they stopped helping them with weapons and instead offered only assistance in reconstruction.

Before that, Berlusconi said that "Putin was pushed by the Russian people, the party, his ministers" to the war against Ukraine, and the purpose of the invasion was supposedly to create a government of "worthy people" in Kyiv.

Despite Berlusconi's very controversial reputation, leading politicians in Italy and around the world had almost nothing but good things to say about him on Monday.

"Silvio Berlusconi was first and foremost a fighter, he was a man who was never afraid to defend his views. It was this courage, this determination that made him one of the most influential people in the history of Italy," Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni said.

"Today the great son of Italy says goodbye to us. One of the greatest in history, in all areas, from all points of view, he has no equal. And most importantly, today I lost a great friend. I am shocked. I rarely cry, but today I am one of those days," said Deputy Prime Minister Mateo Salvini, leader of the right-wing populist League party.

Guido Crosetto, Italy's defense minister, said the former prime minister was leaving "a huge void" behind him. "An era is over, an era is closing," Crosetto tweeted. "I loved him very much. Goodbye Silvio."

Former Prime Minister and leader of the Italia Viva (Living Italy) political party Matteo Renzi also paid tribute to Berlusconi.

He tweeted: "Many loved him, many hated him: today everyone must admit that his impact on political as well as economic, sports and television life was unprecedented. Today, Italy mourns with his family, his loved ones, his companies, his party."

"He was, of course, an incredibly important figure in the life of Italy, in the political life, in the public life of the country," Blinken said in Washington at a joint press conference with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who was one of Berlusconi's main associates and together with him in the 1990s he created the Forward, Italy party.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, with whom Berlusconi maintained a friendship before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, said in a television interview that Berlusconi was a great friend of the Russian people and "did a lot to develop business, friendly relations between Russia and European countries."

According to the TASS agency, Putin also said that Berlusconi was an unusual politician, because he said what he thought.

"Either admiration or contempt"

Silvio Berlusconi is a media tycoon, one of the richest people in Italy and a long-liver of Italian politics, who has worked as prime minister for the longest time in the country.

Berlusconi's political and business career was accompanied by numerous scandals, and his statements often became the object of harsh criticism. According to the Italian media, the controversial figure of a politician causes Italians either admiration or contempt.

For the first time, Berlusconi became the head of the Italian government in 1994 - just two months after the founding of the Forza Italia party. Now the party is a member of the ruling coalition, and Berlusconi himself has been sitting in the 19th Senate since September last year.

The former four-time prime minister has appeared in court numerous times over the years and once claimed that he took part in 2,500 court hearings in 106 trials over two decades.

The charges against him included embezzlement, tax fraud and false reporting, and attempted bribing of a judge.

He often accused prosecutors of a political vendetta against him, denying the allegations against him.

Although he was repeatedly acquitted or overturned of convictions, in 2013 he was convicted of tax fraud, which disqualified him from holding political office for several years.

The court also ordered him to perform community service at a Catholic nursing home in Milan.

Relations with Russia and Putin

Berlusconi was considered one of the most consistent supporters of strengthening Europe's ties with Russia.

In 2003, he stated that Russia should become a member of the EU. He later admitted that it was "too far a dream", but stated that sooner or later it would happen.

Shortly before his death, the former President of Italy, in an article for the Italian edition of Giornale, wrote that he was trying to unite Russia and the countries of the West, but some of the leaders of Europe did not allow him to do this.

"I still regret that my attempts to bring Russia into the camp of the West were boycotted by some European leaders. If we managed to do this, the European scenario today would be completely different," Berlusconi wrote. Speaking about the situation in Ukraine, he suggested that the situation in Europe would be different if his plan for Russia had been implemented.

Nearly three months after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Berlusconi said Europe must persuade Kyiv to accept Moscow's demands for a settlement of the conflict. After coming under fire, Berlusconi subsequently retracted his words and called on the parties to peace.

Berlusconi was considered a friend of Vladimir Putin, they met more than once, including in an informal setting. In 2015, Berlusconi visited Putin in the annexed Crimea.

In October last year, a scandal erupted in Italy over an audio recording of Berlusconi's speech . Judging by the publication of the newspaper La Presse, he told fellow party members that he exchanged gifts with President Putin in the form of a case of vodka and bottles of wine, as well as "pleasant letters."
