After President Vladimir Putin expressed dissatisfaction with the results of the work of the flagship of the defense industry "Rostec" a year ago, the state corporation under the control of his friend Sergei Chemezov set to work.

In addition to the mass purchase of Chinese Dobrynya drones from AliExpress, Rostec undertook to create analogues of the American HIMARS and French CAESARs in a year - for this, the company decided to install Soviet guns developed in the USSR on wheeled chassis. At the Army of Russia 2023 forum, Rostec on August 10 announced the appearance of new wheeled howitzers in the army - Malva and Phlox.

"Malva" has already passed state tests. Now its mass production has been launched. The first samples will be delivered to the troops in the coming months, ” Rostec Deputy General Director Vladimir Artyakov told RIA Novosti .

As for Phlox, according to Artyakov, it is at the final stage of testing. “Believe me, we will have something to oppose to the long-range western howitzers that are now being supplied to the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” the top manager said.

Both vehicles, in fact, are copies of self-propelled howitzers developed 50 years ago, but they were transferred to the BAZ-6610 (8×8 wheels) and Ural 4320 (6×6) wheelbases.

For "Malva" with a range of 24-28 km, they took a 152-mm howitzer 2A64 from the Soviet tracked self-propelled guns "Msta", and "Floks" with a range of up to 10 km borrowed a gun from the Soviet designers of the landing vehicle "Nona".

In terms of range, "Malva" loses at least a third not only to Western models, but even to Serbian ones. A similar American M109 "Paladin" shoots at 30-45 km, the Swedish Archer - at 30-40 km, the French 155-mm self-propelled guns CAESAR throws a projectile at 40 km, the Slovak self-propelled guns Zuzana 2 - at 41 km, German self-propelled guns PzH 2000 - at 36 -47 km. Even the Serbian self-propelled guns "Nora B-52" has a range of under 40 km. HIMARS impact range in different variations from 45 to 300 km.

And although Russian experts do not cease to scatter in compliments. The director of the Air Defense Forces Museum, Yuri Knutov, told Gazeta.ru that the Nona, with a firing range of almost 9 km, still has no analogues in the world.
