The President of the Russian Federation will be held accountable for war crimes in Ukraine, Tomoko Akane is sure. "Heaven's revenge is slow but sure," she explained.

The new President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Tomoko Akane, on Wednesday, March 20, expressed confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin will be held accountable for war crimes in Ukraine. In response to a related question from reporters, she reportedly quoted a Chinese proverb: "Heaven's revenge is slow but sure."

Akane acknowledged the challenges facing the ICC. Among other things, she noted that over the past two years there have been no cases of detention of people against whom arrest warrants were issued.

Arrest warrant for Putin

Japanese judge Tomoko Akane was among three ICC judges who in March 2023 signed an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and children's ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova on charges of illegally deporting children from the occupied territories of Ukraine to Russia. In March 2024, she became head of the ICC .

In Russia, a case has been opened against Akane under articles of knowingly illegal detention and preparation for an attack on a representative of a foreign state. The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs put her on the wanted list.

On March 5, 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants for the commander of long-range aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces Sergei Kobylash and the commander of the Black Sea Fleet Viktor Sokolov on suspicion of crimes committed during the war in Ukraine between October 10, 2022 and March 9, 2023. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia does not recognize the decisions of the International Criminal Court.
