YouTube steps up action against users with ad blockers

Video hosting YouTube has begun to use new ways to counter users who use ad blockers. These measures include running hours-long, unskippable commercials.

Google's official position

Google representatives confirmed that such actions are part of the company's policy. YouTube's statement highlights:

"Advertising is a vital tool for supporting content creators to grow their businesses. The use of ad blockers violates YouTube's Terms of Service. We have launched a global campaign to encourage users to allow advertising on YouTube or upgrade to a YouTube Premium subscription."

YouTube also clarified that standard non-skippable commercials in a video stream are limited to 15 seconds. However, the platform actively detects users trying to bypass ads and takes additional measures to dissuade them from doing so.

New level of restrictions

If you continue to use blockers, Google reserves the right to disable content playback. Users with enabled blockers are faced with persistent advertising series lasting up to an hour or more. For example:

  • To watch a 49-minute video, YouTube showed a 52-minute ad.

  • Another user reported an ad that was 58 minutes long.

History of the fight against ad blockers

  • October 2023: YouTube began massively notifying users about the need to disable blockers. The platform displayed warnings requiring users to whitelist YouTube or sign up for a Premium subscription.

  • July 2024: During the advertising period, users with blockers were shown a black screen instead of a video.

  • May 2024: A function has been introduced that automatically scrolls the video to the end for users with blockers.

Conclusion

These measures are part of YouTube's strategy to monetize and support content creators. However, their effectiveness is controversial among users and experts. Hours of commercials challenge users' desire to continue using the platform without a Premium subscription.
